Tiffany Joh - Rookie Blog Two

Thu, 03/24/2011 - 12:17pm
I've never been very good with directions, but I think I experienced my all time low the second day of the New Zealand Open, when LPGA player/Nature girl/Ice cream connoisseur Katie Futcher asked if I'd like to accompany her on a little walk in the nearby town of Sumner. First, a walk for me is the seven feet between my couch and my television, not a hike up a beachside cliff. Second, even that gets me winded.

Date for announcement of the 2011 European Solheim Cup Team

Thu, 03/24/2011 - 7:36am
Thursday March 24, 2011 -- Alison Nicholas will announce her European Solheim Cup team for 2011 on Monday 29th August following the publication of the weekly Rolex Women's World Golf Rankings.    The 12 woman squad competing at Killeen Castle in Ireland from September 23-25, 2011, will comprise the top four players on the Ladies European Tour's Solheim Cup points ranking, the next best four players from the Rolex Rankings, with a further four selected players from the Ladies European Tour.   Laura Davies, the only player in Solheim Cup history to have participated in all 11 editions of the event, is targeting her 12th appearance on the team. The English star has played in 43 of the 48 matches contested since the inaugural event at Lake Nona in 1990. With 23.5 points earned in Solheim Cup competition, Davies is just half a point shy of equalling Annika Sorenstam' record as the event's all-time leading points' scorer. The 79-time tournament champion currently leads the LET Solheim Cup points list after collecting five trophies over the 2010 season and is determined to secure her place on the team.   Last year's Turkish Airlines Ladies Open champion, Melissa Reid, from England, is in second position on the list and is desperate to make her Solheim Cup debut after injury effectively forced her out of the reckoning for the 2009 event at Rich Harvest Farms in America.   Frenchwoman Virginie Lagoutte-Clement is third on the list and also targeting her Solheim Cup debut. Last year the mother of one overcame difficult conditions to capture her third LET title at the Aberdeen Ladies Scottish Open presented by EventScotland at Archerfield Links in East Lothian and posted five additional top-four finishes over the season.   Denmark's Iben Tinning, who claimed her sixth career title at the 2010 Omega Dubai Ladies Masters, is fourth on the list but has retired from competition. With Suzann Pettersen, Trish Johnson, Florentyna Parker, Marianne Skarnord, Becky Brewerton and Christel Boeljon next on the list, there is a mixture of rookies and experience within the top 10 positions and the contenders on the periphery will all be hoping to use the 2011 LET season to stake their claims.   "With fewer than seven months to go until tee off at Killeen Castle, I am pleased with the way the European Solheim Cup team is quietly taking shape," said Nicholas. "The early part of this season will offer the opportunity for all of the European players to demonstrate their skills as they seek to qualify for the team and it will be exciting to watch who will carry their form forward and what new talents emerge."    Norwegian Suzann Pettersen , the World No.5, currently leads the Europeans on the Rolex Rankings followed by Anna Nordqvist, Maria Hjorth, Catriona Matthew and Sophie Gustafson, who won the AIB Ladies Irish Open last year at Killeen Castle, The Solheim Cup venue. They are closely followed by Melissa Reid and Azahara Muñoz.   With plenty to play for, there are guaranteed to be many twists and turns before the team is confirmed on 29th August. The 2011 USA Solheim Cup Team will be announced a week earlier on Sunday 21st August at the Safeway Classic Presented by Coca-Cola, Aug. 19-21 at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in North Plains, Oregon.

Kia Classic Pre-Tournament Notes and Interviews

Thu, 03/24/2011 - 4:57am
Kia Classic Industry Hills Golf Club at Pacific Palms City of Industry, Calif. March 22, 2011 Pre-tournament notes and interviews YANI TSENG, Rolex Rankings No. 1, four-time winner worldwide in 2011 KARRIE WEBB, Rolex Rankings No. 8, winner of the 2011 HSBC Women's Champions, RR Donnelley LPGA Founders Cup The Kia Classic returns for the second year, this time emigrating a couple hours north from San Diego to the Los Angeles area at Industry Hills Golf Club at Pacific Palms. And befitting of the LPGA's return to tinsel town after a six-year hiatus, the tournament is packed with star power. Rolex Rankings No. 1 Yani Tseng and No. 2 Jiyai Shin lead a major-championship-caliber field into the March 21-27 tournament. The field features all of the top 10 and 22 of the top 25 players in the Rolex Women's World Golf Rankings, including the defending champions of all four LPGA majors. It also features Hall of Famer Karrie Webb, who won for the 37th and 38th times of her career at the LPGA's last two events, the HSBC Women's Champions in Singapore and the RR Donnelley LPGA Founders Cup in Phoenix. The 144-player field for the Kia Classic also includes 2010 top American Cristie Kerr, 2010 leading money winner Na Yeon Choi, American favorites Michelle Wie, Paula Creamer, Morgan Pressel and Brittany Lincicome, global stars Suzann Pettersen and Ai Miyazato, and many other great stars of the LPGA. The field also includes defending champion Hee Kyung Seo and sponsor exemptions Shasta Averyhardt, who's the fourth African-American player ever to earn LPGA membership and Blair O'Neal, who appeared in last month's Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue in an ad for Cobra PUMA golf. Caught in her Webb: For a while, Yani Tseng, who won four tournaments worldwide to start 2011, was considered the hottest player on the planet. But with a win last week at the RR Donnelley LPGA Founders Cup to back up her win at the HSBC Women's Champions, the previous LPGA event, Karrie Webb has at least entered the conversation. Last Sunday at the RR Donnelley LPGA Founders Cup, she fired a final-round, six-under 66 to overcome second-round leader Angela Stanford and outlast Brittany Lincicome and Paula Creamer by one shot. “I don't want to question it too much as to what's going right, but I think it's such a fine line between having great results or having OK results, great results and winning,” Webb said. “I think I'm just on the right side of that, doing the right things at the right time. Getting up and down when I need to, and making a birdie putt to keep some positive momentum going.” Speaking of Tseng, the 2010 Rolex Player of the Year ascended to Rolex Rankings No. 1 early this season after winning four straight events worldwide, including the ISPS Handa Women's Australian Open and ANZ RACV Ladies Open co-sanctioned by Australian Ladies Professional Golf (ALPG) and the Ladies European Tour (LET) and the season-opening Honda LPGA Thailand on the LPGA Tour. Tseng won two major championships last season – the Kraft Nabisco Championship and RICOH Women's British Open – and needs only a U.S. Women's Open win to complete the career Grand Slam. Never Give Up Japan: The Japanese trio of Ai Miyazato, Mika Miyazato and Momoko Ueda got together and set up a fundraising website to help their country recover from recent tragedies. The website can be found at http://www.firstgiving.com/fundraiser/MakerunaNippon/Never-Give-Up-Japan. The trio also designed a logo for the effort, which they'll wear on buttons and will pass out to other players to wear. Rolex Rankings No. 1 Yani Tseng wore one in support Tuesday. Of note… Jane Rah and Lee-Ann Pace earned the last two spots in the field via Monday's qualifier. They shot 3-under 70s to earn spots in a three-way, sudden-death playoff… Rookie Jessica Korda, daughter of former world No. 1 tennis player Petr Korda, made a hole-in-one in practice Tuesday on the 178-yard eighth hole. She hit a 4-iron. YANI

Now that golf bag, which has been autographed by Wie, is going up for auction to help support the Keep A Breast Foundation. Beginning Thursday, fans can log on to LPGA.com to place a bid on Wie's golf bag. “I think it's very critical and very important that people are aware of preventing breast cancer,” Wie said. “And I think it's such a great program, and I'm very honored to have helped create this bag. Hopefully it will go for a very high bid.”

LPGA Japanese Players Join Together For Japan Relief

Tue, 03/22/2011 - 4:48pm
Ai's Story | Make a Donation | Facebook Fan Page The Japanese trio of Ai Miyazato, Mika Miyazato and Momoko Ueda got together and set up a fundraising website to help their country recover from recent tragedies. We'll let them speak for themselves in the below transcript. Also see the attached logo, designed specially by these three players to represent their efforts. The trio is wearing buttons on their caps (see attached photo), and they are distributing them to other players as well. Yani Tseng, Rolex Rankings No. 1, wore one today at her press conference. AI MIYAZATO, MIKA MIYAZATO, MOMOKO UEDA THE MODERATOR: Good afternoon. Welcome to our first press conference at the 2011 Kia Classic. Thanks for joining us today. We have three very special guests with us. Directly to my left is Mika Miyazato. In the middle is Ai Miyazato, no relation, and to my far left is Momoko Ueda as well. So three LPGA Tour members from Japan. Obviously, they've had a very emotional last couple of weeks in regards to the tragedies that have occurred in Japan. This is their first tournament that they'll be playing on the LPGA Tour since that incident. They are, of course, doing all they can to support their fans and friends and family in Japan. I'd like to first start by asking Ai Miyazato to first explain a little bit in English. We're going to take English questions first about where you were when the incident happened, and your decision about getting together as a group to help raise funds and awareness for the victims? AI MIYAZATO: I was in Japan the last couple of weeks because I had a tournament right after the HSBC. Right now, it happened and really sad. It feels like nothing I can do. But I just realized like we could be together and do something in America and try to get help as many as I can. I've also set up a charitable organization, a fundraising website. And together with the three of us, we'd like to get this spread out and as known as possible. THE MODERATOR: Ai actually wrote a first-person article that will be in this week's edition of "Sports Illustrated" magazine. It's also currently online at Sports Illustrated Golf so you can see her words first person that she wrote, which was done over the weekend. There are three websites, a Japanese website that has been organized to raise funds. There is also a website that's available for supporters that can donate in UK Pounds, and there is also a U.S. website as well for those who would like to donate from the United States. At the back, there is the article by Ai that includes the U.K. URL. And there is also a second sheet that has the U.S. URL for those who would like to donate. So if you could ask Mika to perhaps talk a little bit about where she was when this happened and her feelings emotionally about the experience. MIKA MIYAZATO: When the earthquake happened I was on a flight from Okinawa to Osaka, and I realized what had happened after I landed. But really didn't know what exactly happened. But after watching TV the following day, I had seen that Sendai, the City of Sendai and was hit very hard with the disaster. Because us three players play in the U.S., after the disaster, I began to think about what we can do together to help the victims in Japan. That's why we are sitting up in front of everyone right now to discuss about our project, and I hope that this project can help as many people in Sendai as possible. THE MODERATOR: Momoko, do you want to explain to us where you were during the earthquake and what you've been doing since before this first tournament? MOMOKO UEDA: I was in Tokyo on the freeway when the earthquake happened, so I actually literally felt the ground shake, especially when I was close to the city of Sendai as well. I visited Sendai many times before. But what has been happening in Tokyo, not just in Sendai, is really sad. But after my fellow players here, after I thought about what I could do to help out, I decided to get together

Catching up with Anna Nordqvist

Tue, 03/22/2011 - 8:24am
LPGA.com caught up with Anna Nordqvist to reflect on 2010, talk about her off season, and find out how she has prepared for 2011. How would you describe your play in 2010? It was pretty average. I had a couple of good tournaments and a couple of not so good tournaments. I learned a lot and think that is the most important thing at the end of the day. What did you enter the off season looking to improve for 2011? I wanted to improve a lot on my swing. I wanted to be more consistent. I started working with swing coach on technique at the beginning of last year and I just felt like I needed more time and patience doing it. How did you fill the down time this winter? I had a really great time off. I went to Salt Lake City and saw one of my trainers that works with the Canadian Luge team. I hung out with them for a couple of days. I went back to Sweden for two weeks and hung out with my family and friends, so I had a really good time. When did you get back to golf and what have you been working on? I got back into golf after New Year's. I've done a lot of short game because it is one of the most important parts of your game and it can always be a little bit rusty in the beginning of the year. I've also done a lot of technique stuff with my coaches. What is the best part of your game right now? And what still needs improvement? I feel my short game has gotten a lot better. My putting is more where I want it and I feel I still need to work on my wedges. It's a work in progress but I'm very excited about it. What are your goals for 2011? I want to make the European Solheim Cup team and give the Americans a big match on European soil. That would be a big highlight of my career. I also just want to get back to being consistent and get a couple of good finishes in there. How often will Solheim Cup points be on your mind? You can't really think about it week after week. If you play well then you'll be there but it's nothing you can focus on week in and week out. I'm just going to try to do the best I can and do my part and hopefully it's good enough. Fitness is a big part of your game…how have you worked out this off season? I started working with Kai Fusser a year ago. I like having more routines and I like playing Tennis. It's a big part of my game and I just work on my overall fitness. Tell us about your new club deal. What will we see in your bag? Cobra is in my bag this year. I've expanded my relationship with PUMA Golf and Cobra Golf. I can't tell you how excited I am about it. I'm putting new irons, driver, and woods in my bag and it's been a really fun journey so far.

Rolex Rankings moves of the week

Tue, 03/22/2011 - 7:03am
A win by Karrie Webb and top finishes by Paula Creamer and Cristie Kerr, led to some shifts in the Rolex Rankings top-10. Webb's second win of the season came at last week's RR Donnelley LPGA Founders Cup and pushed the Australian two spots higher to No. 8. Creamer's second place finish attributed to her three spot jump to No. 9 and Kerr's fourth place finish helped her climb two spots to No. 3.

Kia Classic Tournament Preview

Tue, 03/22/2011 - 6:27am
Rolex Rankings No. 1 Yani Tseng headlines a star-studded field at the second-annual Kia Classic this week at Industry Hills Golf Club at Pacific Palms. Tseng, the winner of the season-opening Honda LPGA Thailand, will do battle with a field that features 77 of the top-80 from the 2010 LPGA Official Money List and the top 11 from the current Rolex Rankings. Tseng will be challenged by LPGA and World Golf Halls of Fame member Karrie Webb who is fresh off back-to-back victories at the HSBC Women's Champions in Singapore and last week's RR Donnelley LPGA Founders Cup, where she edged Brittany Lincicome by one stroke to capture the inaugural title. Webb, who now boasts 38 LPGA victories in her 15-year career, will look to become the first player since Lorena Ochoa (2008) to win three-consecutive events. Joining Tseng and Webb this week will be defending champion Hee Kyung Seo, who last year was a full-time member of the KLPGA and played as a sponsor exemption. Seo, now a rookie of the 2011 LPGA Tour, called the six-shot victory last season a "turning point" in her golf career. A cast of players eager to join the 2011 winner's bracket this week includes Rolex Rankings No. 2 Jiyai Shin, No. 3 Cristie Kerr, No. 4 Suzann Pettersen and No. 5 Na Yeon Choi. It will be up to this group to dethrone Tseng as she attempts to distance herself from the pack as a clear world number one. Projections for the Rolex Rankings following the Kia Classic will be available later in the week. Michelle Wie, a sports-marketing partner of title sponsor Kia, will look for her third victory in three years on the LPGA Tour when she tees it up this week at Industry Hills. This week's event will be the LPGA's third visit to Industry Hills Country Club following the 1981 and 1982 Olympia Gold Classic, won both years by South African Sally Little.

Jennifer Song - Rookie Blog One

Mon, 03/21/2011 - 6:49am
Although it's not the proper way to say my greetings, I'd first like to start off my blog by saying apologizing to all the fans. I didn't realize until today, March 18th, after the first round of RR Donnelley LPGA Founders Cup, that I was the only rookie player that hadn't written her blog. I definitely feel miserable for being the "last one," but I'm so glad that it wasn't the end of 2011 before I figured this out :) But I do have to say that I have some legit excuses for being late. I'll first quickly give a rundown of what I've been doing from the past winter up to this point. After my 2010 season was over, I took 2 1/2 months off of golf and what can I tell you is that it was one of the best times I've ever had in my life. The only time I touched my golf clubs were to play nine holes of Screen Golf with my mom, in which she beat me by shooting under par while I shot 10-over-par just playing nine. Many might be shocked that I took that much time off from golf... It's not that I don't love golf, but I just really needed the break after having played 13 tournaments in a row last year. I would be lying if I said that this long break hadn't affected my game, because I lost approximately 15 yards with all my shots. However, my hard training in Orlando got my game back into shape and ready to roll for the Australian Women's Open in Melbourne. And yes, my first tournament as an LPGA player was a great success, as I finished the tournament in 5th place. Then, I played two more tournaments; one in Gold Coast, Australia, and the other in Pattaya, Thailand. All the tournaments were splendiferous, yet being in Gold Coast was one of my favorite experiences because there was a magnificent beach right in front of where I stayed and I was given the privilege to walk the Surfer's paradise every day while watching the serene view of the ocean. After the Honda LPGA Thailand was over, I flew back to Korea to take care of some business and also filmed with J Golf. I was getting a little exhausted for having to move everywhere, but I really enjoyed everything and the time I was in Korea. Then, I flew back to Orlando and have been sharpening my game until this event. So you can really tell now that my life's been very fast-paced over the last three months.... And here I am playing in the RR Donnelley LPGA Founders Cup! All I can say is that I am just honored to be playing on the LPGA Tour, which wouldn't have existed without the 13 Founders and your support. Last but not least, I feel grateful for being able to play the game that I truly love! P.S. Please follow me at www.jennifersonggolf.com or on twitter @TheJenniferSong

LPGA and World Golf Halls of Fame member Karrie Webb shot a final-round 6-under 66 to win the inaugural RR Donnelley LPGA Founders Cup. Her final round charge at Wildfire Golf Club at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort & Spa included seven birdies and one bogey to prevail by one stroke over three-time LPGA Tour winner Brittany Lincicome. Webb fired rounds of 71-67-66 to capture her second-consecutive win of the 2011 LPGA Tour season and her 38th LPGA career victory. She won the HSBC Women's Champions three weeks ago. The victory earned Webb $200,000 to be donated to her charities of choice, Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation and Japan Relief.
